A couple weeks back, as the Celtics wrapped up a Christmas Day win in Orlando on a nationally televised game the future looked great. A game won without the Celtics best all around player and Captain Paul Pierce (I have to write an article on how Pierce is playing one of the worst statistical seasons while simultaneously playing the best ball of his career). Sure, there was a short West Coast road trip coming up where some helpful soul in the league office scheduled 3 games in 4 nights, but how hard can that be?
Well two weeks and 4 losses (which easily could be 5) later, the outlook is not as rosy. We don’t quite know what is going on with Kevin Garnett’s knee. My understanding is that hyperextension can mean a lot of things. The team’s spin is good, KG could play today if this was the playoffs but the Celtics clearly need the leadership and physical play of Garnett. Rasheed Wallace has performed well, but is clearly not the rebounder that Garnett is.
Glen Davis is still recovering from punching his friend in the offseason, and is back to his early-career physique of a sea lion. Some players go to that training facility in Arizona and work on strength. Some guys get into the pro and college pickup games in LA and Chicago. Davis goes a different path, one that runs directly through the Golden Corral. Big Baby is currently shooting 1 for 193 by my calculations.
The schedule for the rest of the month should help the C’s out, as they won’t be going West of Detroit until February. Lots of home games, players get to sleep in their own beds etc. With any luck KG and Tony Allen will get healthy sooner rather than later. Marquis Daniels should be right around the corner, although it remains to be seen how effective he can be handling the ball after his hand surgery. There’s not a lot of moves to be made with this roster (more on that later this week), so the Celtics really need to improve from within. The first step (or limp) is getting Garnett back as soon as possible.
